Summary: Crossposted to [info]pirates500, written for their "Unfulfilled Longing" challenge. 500 words exactly. Where *did* Jack get that compass, and what made it work?

It began ten years past, it had, when her dashing beloved mad Captain Jack Sparrow took a piece of her away.

He’d been kind, he’d been gentle...hadn’t hurt her. She hadn’t bled; indeed she didn’t know if she was capable of bleeding--she presumed not since she hadn’t by now. He’d whispered to her softly, firm, with a sure hand, murmuring his love for her and how it would never die. He swore to her he’d take her to the edges of the earth and back again, across every sea to every land he could find, as his deft fingers brushed against her softly, shudderingly... He didn’t want to hurt her, he said, but it was just that he needed to do this this and do it he did, and good lord it was all just a dull ache now yet somehow still as fresh as yesterday’s wound.

And later, she didn’t understand why but he was gone. Gone and taken that piece of her that would always be his, because she’d given it to him freely, because there’d been no other choice and it had been hers to give and his to take. And now she felt it, every white hot second of every scorching Caribbean day and every aching black hour of every sultry tropical night--the piece he’d taken called to her, drove her mad with yearning, not sure if she wanted him to return to her or just give the piece of herself back he’d taken. She had a dull suspicion they were one and the same.

And after ten years of thirst for the heady rare liquor that was her dashing beloved mad Captain Jack Sparrow, she felt a stirring. A low primal sense of reunion. Could it be he was returning, coming back to her to make good on his promises, to slake her parched depths with the liquid rolling flow of his body on her, in her, beside her, astride her...? The more she considered, the more she felt it must be true. The pull of her severed self was so strong it screamed to her on the headwinds of the storm that blew him from wherever he was back to her side. And suddenly...he was there.

Oh, he was back, and ready to fight for her, Jack was. And he brought with him all the madness and pain and wounds and glory and lust and hatred and screaming beautiful glorious delirium she knew from ten years past. And when it was over, he was back where he belonged, his hands so sure and loving and the piece of her he’d taken away returned and so near that it didn’t matter if it weren’t put right back where he got it. His familiar rugged hand slid along the arch of her wheel as he murmured, “Now bring me that horizon.”

He was hers, this man, this skin and bones and blood and hair--that was what a man meant...but her Jack, what he really was...was freedom.

I knew where you were going with this from the first line, but that's not to say it's predictable--just to say that I love this pairing, and I feel the same way about it. ^_^

I seem to remember that I've liked your POTC fics from the beginning. This one may be your best yet, IMO. I get a little thrill everytime I see your icon up here with a new story.

In short, this is a wonderful piece. :D

I'm an idiot--I didn't get it until now. Dang! I wish I could say I'd gotten this from the movie, but I can't even say that. The compass doesn't point North because it points to the Pearl!

Duh! I'm a moron.

Your story is even better with this in mind. Thank you for pointing it out to me. Whole new layer. :D

I have to admit, the compass intrigued me from the beginning, because in China Mieville's pirate novel The Scar the pirate city of Armada issues her fleet compasses that all point back to Armada so they can find their way home, even though the city itself is afloat and moves around the seas. I was trying to think about how, in the world of PotC, Jack's compass would have been made and what made it work!

And thank you, glad you liked the piece, and that it brought you a deeper understanding of part of the movie! Your fics are brilliant, too--the original lovestory of Jack and the sea that you posted made me a.) weep and b.) feel a bit jealous i didn't think of that plotline first! ;D

No, actually, the compass points to the island. How else did they find the bearing to the island in the first place, when he was captaining the Pearl the first time? But they got the bearing from him, and then dropped him off, but he managed to keep the compass.

Hmm! Then I'll just have to watch the movie again. Just to make sure, like. ;D The one thing I did notice is that at the end, when he finally regains the Pearl, he checks the compass. Wonder where he's going, then? If the compass points to Isla de Muertes, d'you think he could be going back there again? I wonder this, especially after seeing the little scene they stuck in after the credits. :D

Interesting theories, all. Here's hoping that the sequel clears them up.

He's going back to get more of that gold they left there, of course! There was a HELL of a lot of gold, and everybody else who knows where it is is in JAIL! :D

I didn't stay through the credits, dammit. I need to make it a point to always stay through the credits at all movies, since more and more of them are putting in scenes afterwards. I like to, anyway, to clear out the crowds, but [info]starbrow jumped up before people were even done clearing out, which I hate... *sigh* I like to at *least* wait until everybody else is gone before I leave.

I still wonder where he got the compass, though...

Ai! That third full paragraph, describing Jack as liquor, and especially .. her parched depths with the liquid rolling flow of his body on her, in her, beside her, astride her...? ... fantastic. :D

Thank you!

It's funny, i just sat back down at the puter and reread the story, and thought "gee, this sounds like it could be a Mary Sue..." til you get to the end and realize it's the Black Pearl who's the main character! :D

This was really excellently done! The metaphors were not quite too much and were just enough, and it all feels like puzzle pieces clicking together, the way you explain the compass and all. I like it very much! :D

Wow. I think this is the first fic I've sen from the POV of the Black Pearl, and I love it. It's beautifully written, and the sexual undertones are great (especially that "on her, in her, beside her, astride her" bit). It sounds at the start like a woman losing her virginity, which is also sort of cool.

Amazingly done. Your fic always reads like poetry.

He was hers, this man, this skin and bones and blood and hair--that was what a man meant

Everybody loves Jack. *g*
